How it all begins
In 2002, Janaka began his journey in the travel industry as a tourist driver at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo. New to the tourism industry, Janaka began the difficult process of learning about and breaking into distribution via tour operators and travel agents. It was a time of learning and growth, where he interacted with diverse people and gained invaluable experiences that shaped his understanding of hospitality.
From the outset, Janaka confronted the harsh realities of his job: long hours, frequent challenges, and the frustration of waiting days at the airport for tourists. The company’s practice of favoring drivers known personally to management meant many like Janaka struggled for opportunities. His sense of fairness often prompted him to question these practices. However, his defiance led to an unexpected ordeal: while assisting a customer at the airport, he was unjustly arrested by security on charges of idleness, accompanied by a nominal fine of $8.
Realizing this incident was a deliberate ploy by his employer, Janaka took a courageous step. With his deepened understanding of tourism and a commitment to exceptional service, he chose to leave his job. This pivotal moment marked a turning point in his career. Driven by a passion to revolutionize tourism experiences, Janaka founded Show Lanka Tours on December 3, 2002. His vision was clear: to offer tourists not just a service, but an unforgettable journey through Sri Lanka. With a personal touch, he aimed to anticipate and exceed every traveler’s expectation, ensuring their comfort and satisfaction in every aspect of their stay.
In Janaka’s story, resilience and determination converge to create a narrative of transformation. From adversity sprang a venture founded on integrity and a genuine desire to elevate the travel experience. Today, Show Lanka Tours stands as a testament to Janaka’s unwavering commitment to hospitality and his unwritten promise to every traveler: a journey beyond expectations.
